Today (Friday, May 26) is 65 Roses Day, a national day to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis.
The term ’65 Roses’ was coined by a four-year-old boy in the US in 1965 who had recently been diagnosed with the condition, he overheard his Mum talking on the phone and thought she’d said ’65 Roses’ instead of cystic fibrosis.
The day supports people living with cystic fibrosis in the community, and on 65 Roses Day by purchasing a bouquet, or sending a virtual rose you can support those who need it most.
Funds raised help provide vital funds for support services to people with cystic fibrosis, and fund critical research.
Pharmacy 777 is proudly supporting 65 Roses Day by setting up a virtual rose garden, where people can dedicate a virtual rose to someone and donate money to Cystic Fibrosis WA.
The virtual rose garden was inspired by Lara, who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just three weeks old.
To help manage her condition Lara does three nebulisers a day and also takes about 20 tablets.
“I have one of the more rare mutations which unfortunately means I don’t have access to some of the recent miracle drugs which a large percentage of the cystic fibrosis population can benefit from,” Lara said.
“I am now working as a nurse - I find fulfilment in helping others, just as I have been looked after during my hospital admissions and clinic appointments.
“Donations made to Cystic Fibrosis WA for 65 Roses Day are directed towards funding vital research into treatments and eventually, a cure for cystic fibrosis. Every donation helps add tomorrows for me.”
Pharmacy 777 Managing Director Kim Brotherson said he was inspired by Lara’s positive outlook, tenacity and strength of spirit.
“We’re delighted to help support 65 Roses Day at Pharmacy 777.
Lara handles her condition with great dignity and is a true advocate for people living rich and fulfilling lives with Cystic Fibrosis,” Kim said.
Kim and his daughter Sana have already contributed $2,000 in Lara’s name to the Pharmacy 777 rose garden.
