The ability to breathe freely is something many of us take for granted each day, but for the seven million Australians living with lung disease1 this isn’t the case.
World Lung Day is held annually on the 25th of September, opening conversations across the globe about lung health, how we can improve it, and spreading important information about the causes and prevention. This World Lung Day, Pharmacy 777 recognises the impacts of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) on Australian lives and the Australian healthcare system, with our Pharmacists taking the initiative to educate and provide better support for patients diagnosed with COPD.
COPD is an ongoing lung condition caused by damage to the airways, making it difficult to breathe due to swelling and inflammation of the lungs. Although a preventable and treatable disease, COPD was the underlying cause of death in 4% of all deaths in Australia, making it the fifth leading cause of death in Australia2. Pharmacy 777 Pharmacist Jacqueline Tan said, “COPD is common, however it is very often misdiagnosed or not diagnosed at all. A later diagnosis can contribute to worsening lung function, so it is important to recognise the signs as early as you can.”
Understand the signs
Often people can mistake lung disease symptoms as signs of aging or poor fitness, leading them to make lifestyle changes rather than getting prompt medical support.
Some of the warning signs of possible lung disease include:
-
Unexplained or worsening breathlessness
-
Persistent cough
-
Weight loss
-
Fatigue
-
Wheeze
-
Chest infections
“At Pharmacy 777 we can support you if you think you may have symptoms by referring you to the appropriate health professional. We can also support patients diagnosed with COPD, helping them to keep their condition stable.”
Reduce your risk
-
Quit smoking – Smoking is a major cause of lung disease and quitting can significantly improve lung health and reduce your risk of developing lung diseases such as COPD and lung cancer.
-
Regular exercise and healthy diet – Eating a balanced diet and exercising regularly, particularly activities such as walking, jogging, swimming and cycling can strengthen your respiratory muscles and prevent lung damage.
-
Avoid exposure to pollutants – Minimising your exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollutants, using air purifiers indoors and wearing a mask when exposed to dust, gas, fumes or chemicals can help to protect your lungs.
-
Protect yourself from infection- It is important to protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by practicing good hygiene (washing hands, avoiding contact with people who are sick) and staying up to date with your vaccinations. Your 777 Pharmacist can support you to stay up to date with your vaccinations.
-
Speak to a Health professional – Your 777 Pharmacist can support you to understand the signs and symptoms of lung disease, as well as referring you to a GP where necessary. Lung Health Australia have also developed an online Lung Health Check.
Pharmacy 777 Pharmacists work in collaboration with other health professionals to offer personalised and holistic advice and support to patients.
